and entertainment executives found themselves fending off Congressional
criticism that they exploit violence and sexism for profit at
yesterday's unprecedented congressional hearings on hip hop. Members

executives, rappers, and others such as Edgar Bronfman Jr., chairman of
the Warner Music Group, Doug Morris, chairman of the
Universal Music Group, rappers David Banner and Percy "Master P"
Miller, and author
Michael Eric Dyson.
Oprah Hosts $3 million Obama Fundraiser

Some 1,500 guests paid $2,300 dollars a head to be at the Oprah
Winfrey-hosted fundraiser for presidential candidate, Sen. Barack Obama
(D-IL) at her 42-acre, $50 million estate in Montecito, California. The
Saturday night event attracted celebrities such as Will Smith, Sidney
Poitier, Whoopi Goldberg, Chris Rock, Halle Berry, Forest Whitaker,
Tyler Perry, Dennis Haysbert, Nia Long, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evans and
Judge Greg Mathis. Stevie Wonder, Michelle Obama's favorite singer,
played for the crowd. The event raised $3 million for the Obama
campaign.

Members of Congress plan to grill top major label
executives about the "stereotypes and degradation" of women ---
particularly African- American women in rap videos and lyrics. The
hearing, called "From Imus to Industry: The Business of Stereotypes and
Degradation," is being organized by Rep. Bobby Rush
(D-Illinois), chairman of the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade and
Consumer Protection, and is tentatively scheduled for September 25.
