Morris Chestnut, David E. Talbert And BET Join Forces To Stage “Love In The Nick Of Tyme”
posted on Nov 21, 2006

David E. Talbert
Film star Morris Chestnut will make his theatrical stage and producing debut in David E. Talbert’s 12th stage play “Love In The Nick Of Tyme.”  The production will mount in January 2007 for a 12 city, limited engagement, tour and will also be filmed for DVD distribution through UrbanWorks Entertainment.

One of the most recognized stars in Hollywood today, Chestnut made his feature film debut in 1991’s breakthrough film “Boyz ‘N The Hood.”  He went to on star in acclaimed films such as “The Best Man,” “Gi Jane,” “Like Mike” and “Ladder 49.”  Chestnut recently completed filming “A Perfect Christmas” with Gabrielle Union and Academy Award© nominees Queen Latifah and Terrence Howard and is currently in production on “The Game Plan” with The Rock.

Created by award-winning theatre writer/director and best-selling author David E. Talbert, “Love In The Nick Of Tyme” is a classic tale of relationships, challenges, and dreams deferred.  The story centers on smart and sexy salon owner, Tyme Prentice, who is doing her best to raise her seventeen-year-old son, while attempting to maintain a relationship with his father, Marcelles.  Marcelles has never made Tyme a priority, but goes out of his way to make sure no one else does, either.

“This is a unique opportunity for me, as an actor and now as a producer,” says Chestnut.  “I’ve been in front of the camera but always had a strong desire to produce.  I’ve always had ideas for content, especially content the supports the African American community.  So, linking up with someone as creatively accomplished as David just makes good sense. With the ever-changing marketplace, now is the perfect time to diversify by incorporating all that I’ve learned over the years.”

Talbert has written and produced 11 blockbuster stage plays and amassed 24 NAACP Image Awards© nominations since 1991.  A staple in the Black theatre circuit for 15 years, Talbert has redefined the image of African Americans in theatre with productions that speak to everyday challenges of life involving love, relationships, family, loss, redemption and hope.  Talbert has developed one of the most recognized brands in the urban inspirational musical and comedy theatre genre and established a platform for the growth of the Black theatre circuit, which has roots that pre-date Vaudeville.

“Nick Of Tyme marks my 15th anniversary in theater,” said Talbert, “And what better way to celebrate than to link my brand with Morris Chestnut. Starting with a play makes all the sense in the world given his status as a romantic leading man, and that most of my bigger plays have been romantic musicals. The fact that we’ve been on different sides of the camera makes our collaboration interesting.”

BET has signed on as the title sponsor of the national tour for “Love In The Nick Of Tyme.”  “In partnership with UrbanWorks and BET, ‘NICK OF TYME’ will be the most widely promoted touring musical in the history of urban theatre,” says Brett Dismuke, director of marketing for UrbanWorks Entertainment.  “The multitude of platforms where this production will be visible will create new opportunities, new content and new growth for Black theatre.”

“Love In The Nick Of Tyme,” will debut in the following cities beginning in January 2007: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Detroit, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Baltimore, Miami, Orlando and more.
