“The First Breeze of Summer” follows a turbulent time in a working class African-American family, where two unhappy sons come to a head with their stern, overworked father, while the grandmother wistfully recalls her long-lost youthful affairs. The play originated on Broadway 30 years ago when playwright Leslie Lee was a Tony nominee for best play.  The Negro Ensemble Company produced the Broadway play which was directed by Douglas Turner Ward (“A Raisin in the Sun,” “River Niger”).  The new production of “The First Breeze of Summer” at the Stella Adler Theatre in Hollywood, Calif. is presented by Upward Bound Productions and directed by Sam Nickens.

In “The First Breeze of Summer,” three generations of a working-class Black family battle their demons for peace of mind and self-worth. Lucretia, the matriarchal grandmother, haunted by her youth, slips back in time to revisit her three lost loves. Her son, a husband and overworked father, struggles to connect with two discontented sons as they strive to find their own identities. Turbulent times fuel this complex drama that comes to an emotional head in the heat of summer.

The cast includes Todd Cahoon, Peter Karlin, Nadjah M. Dabney, Jamal Doman, Austin Kemie, Kay Benjamin, Hardia Madden, Jr., Regina Randolph, Mark Ridley, Chaz Roberson, Trina A. Robinson, Jennifer Dale Sammons, Derek Shaun, and Vera Seydal Williams.
