Spike Lee Teams with HBO to make Katrina Documentary
posted on Oct 13, 2005

Spike Lee is teaming with HBO to direct and produce a documentary about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. Rumors are circulating the internet suggesting that Lee covertly entered the city with a camera crew to collect footage at some stage following the disaster.

Lee's perspective on the tragedy, tentatively titled "When the Levees Broke," is expected to document the U.S. government's perceived failure to assist the black community and explore conspiracy theories of government involvement in the flooding. During an appearance on CNN to promote his new co-authored memoir/biography, Spike Lee: That's My Story and I'm Sticking To It, Lee told CNN, "It's not too far-fetched. ... I don't put anything past the United States government. I don't find it too far-fetched that they tried to displace all the black people out of New Orleans." Lee says he will use "factual journalism, not creative narrative" in his look at Katrina and New Orleans.

The documentary will to go into production after Lee completes production on the Universal Pictures' mystery-thriller "Inside Man'," which he is currently lensing. "Inside Man" starring Denzel Washington, Clive Owen and Jodie Foster, is due for release early 2006.

"When the Leeves Broke" is expected to air in 2006 on the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

HBO and Lee have collaborated in the past on the documentary "4 Little Girls" (1997) which focused on the September 15, 1963, bombing of a church in Birmingham, Ala., that killed four young, black girls.
