Los Angeles Women's Theatre Festival Kicks Off 15th Anniversary March 27th

The Los Angeles Women's Theatre Festival (LAWTF) kicks off its 15th Anniversary, ONWARD AND UPWARD! on Thursday, March 27th with its Annual Champagne GALA and Awards Ceremony at the historic El Portal Theatre located at 5269 Lankershim Boulevard, North Hollywood, CA 91601. This year's exciting Awards Ceremony is hosted by LAWTF Co-Chairperson Hattie Winston ("Becker") and Ted Lange ("The Love Boat") and directed and written by Fay Hauser-Price ("Story of a People").

This year's five deserving awardees are Dawnn Lewis for the "Integrity Award" ("A Different World"), Ivy Bethune for the "Eternity Award" (Father Murphy," civil rights activist), Evelina Fernandez for the "Rainbow Award" ("La Virgen de " Latino Theater Company), Julia Cho for the "Maverick Award" ("The Piano Teacher," "Durango") and posthumously to Yolanda King ("Odessa," civil rights activist.)

Performing at the Awards Ceremony with be the internationally-acclaimed Lula Washington Dance Theatre, and 2008 performers giving a taste of their performances later over the week-end Kim Wayans ("A Handsome Woman Retreats"), The Lindz ("WASP""), Laxmi Chandrashekar (Singarevva and the Palace"), Ruth Otero ("Dancing with My Demons") and Ellen Hagan ("America What? I Dream an America").

Throughout this year's festival LAWTF will present 23 multicultural and multi-disciplined performers from around the globe including Laxmi Chandrashekar of India ("Singarevva and the Palace") and choreographer Karolina Spaic and dancer Tamara Roso of The Netherlands ("Milkwhite: The Ritual of Disguise"). This year's performers from around the United States include Ellen Hagan of New York ("America What? I Dream an America"), Atalee Judy of Chicago, ("Logotype 03"), mZuri of Florida ("The Fannie Lou Hamer Story" and another evening where mZuri will perform as a vocalist), Vanessa Harris-Adams of Oklahoma ("Who Will Sing for Lena?") and Erica Lann-Clark of Northern California ("Shopping for God").

Celebrity hosts for the 15th anniversary celebration include Jacquie Stephens, Public Affairs Director of KJLH and Lissa Reynolds, Fremont Centre Theatre (Friday, March 28th, 8pm) Loretta Devine of Eli Stone and Kiki Melendez of "Hot Tamales Live!" (March 29th, 2pm), James Pickens, Jr. of "Grey's Anatomy" and Kym Whitley of "College Road Tour" (Saturday, March 29th, 8pm), Lee Meriwether of "All My Children" and Malathi Iyengar of Rangoli Dance Theatre (Sunday, March 30th, 2pm) and Starletta DuPois of "First Sunday" and Dawn Didawick of "Erin Brockovich" (Sunday, March 30th, 7pm).
