ShoWest has named Don Cheadle, who will next star in Columbia Pictures’ “Reign Over Me,” in theaters March 23, as ShoWest Male Star of the Year. The announcement was made by Mitch Neuhauser, co-managing director of the event, which will be held March 12 -15, 2007 in Las Vegas. Cheadle will be presented with the award at ShoWest’s closing night ceremony on Thursday, March 15 at Bally's and Paris Las Vegas. "Don Cheadle’s powerful performances in such movies as “Devil in a Blue Dress,” “Hotel Rwanda,” and “Crash” have not only earned him critical acclaim but have made him one of Hollywood’s most respected actors," said Neuhauser. "We are thrilled to recognize Don Cheadle for all of his outstanding work by presenting him with the ShoWest Male Star of the Year award." Cheadle can next be seen in Columbia Pictures’ new drama “Reign Over Me,” written and directed by Mike Binder (“The Upside of Anger”). Cheadle stars as Alan Johnson who, by chance, meets up with his former college roommate, Charlie Fineman (Adam Sandler) on a Manhattan street corner. Five years after losing his family on 9/11, Charlie – once a successful dentist – has retreated from his life, and Alan is stunned to see the changes in his formerly gregarious friend. At the same time, Alan – who should be enjoying his beautiful wife, children and career – is overwhelmed by his responsibilities. Their rekindled relationship becomes a lifeline for the two men, who are both in need of a trusted friend at this pivotal moment in their lives. Later this summer, Cheadle will star in the Focus Features release “Talk to Me,” the story of Ralph “Petey” Greene, a popular Washington, DC radio host and community activist. In addition, he will reprise his role as Basher Tarr in “Ocean’s Thirteen,” the third film release in the successful series. The Warner Bros. feature film, directed by Steven Soderbergh, also stars George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, Bernie Mac, Ellen Barkin, and Al Pacino. After receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from the prestigious Cal Arts in Valencia, Calif., Cheadle went on to land roles on such television series as “Fame,” “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and “Picket Fences.” In 1995, Cheadle’s breakout performance opposite Denzel Washington in “Devil in a Blue Dress” earned him his first NAACP Image Award nomination; he was also named Best Supporting Actor by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. Cheadle has gone on to star in many major motion pictures, including “Boogie Nights,” “Swordfish,” “Ocean’s Eleven,” “The Assassination of Richard Nixon,” “Ocean’s Twelve,” and the multi-Academy-Award®-winning film “Traffic.” He was nominated for the Academy Award®, Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice, NAACP Image, and Screen Actors Guild Awards for his role in “Hotel Rwanda.” He then starred in and produced Paul Haggis’s independent feature Crash, which won three Academy Awards®, including Best Picture, among a host of honors.
